Here are some magazine contents page references that I use as my inspiration and ideas to build my own magazine contents pages. I follow the conventions of the TIMELESS magazine where it has lots of negative spaces and I also follow the conventions for the BESALEN magazine by adding a picture to the page. I started to use the Besalen Layout into my contents page as I think it was simple and easy to see and I can add pictures to my liking.

After a view consideration, I decide to change the layout of my contents page because I don’t like how the previous one looks, maybe it’s because the previous one is too simple and basic.

This is my inspiration to move the picture to the top as I want to add a page number on the bottom and so that the number can be easily spotted.

I move “The History of Keris” to the right and the “Menteng” to the left as I assume reader would start reading from the left to the right and to easily 

Front Cover Develpment

Here is where I will be updating the research, the progress in the making of my magazine's front cover.

Here are some magazine cover references that I use as inspiration and ideas to build my own magazine covers. I follow a conventions for the Keris magazine where 

First I want to decide what atmosphere on the magazine I want to set. I decided to make it formal so I set the color to be dark and gloomy to create sense of seriousness and tense in the cover page. At first I want it to be a formal magazine, but this color is just too dark and gloomy, I am afraid that it will discourage my readers as they may also think that this magazine may holds dark-themed topics which is too complicated to understand. I want my readers to read my magazine in a curious yet open minded mood and relax while learning the culture, in a way that I don't want people felt pressures/to be forced when reading or understanding the culture.

Too yellow-ish, lacks of color variations.

This is pale and the atmosphere for this is a bit gloomy.

This is a good-decent color, sets a happy mood for the audiences.

This color is too gloomy, pale and too gray, the atmosphere of the picture would be good if it's a magazine about mourning loved one's demise. This will make the reader wondering what will be the mood of the magazine, might discourage some people because they're too confuse with the mood I am trying to set here.

And here is the final color I choose after a few trial of trying color combinations. The collaboration of yellow and orange sets a joyful mood for the reader, making them to feel "warmth" and "comfortable" when reading the magazine. Not only, the color also imitates a sunset atmosphere where Bali is the most popular for the sunset scenery, especially on most of the beaches, with this it strengthen the Balinese vibes to the reader when they're planning to take it back home to their home country.

I am starting to add the masthead for the front cover page. I uses the outline red for the sub heading to indicate how determine I am in this project. The font color white symbolizes purity which is the philosophy of the keris itself, made from purifying minerals from unwanted object. The type face I am using ended with line strokes, as this type face means traditionality, classic, and formality. 

I added orange-yellowish gradient box to separate the title with the rest of the elements of the cover pages, and to make the tittle stands out. I also start adding the coverlines. 

Here my teacher said that the background of the Keris is too bright for the writing to be seen as I am also using bright color for it. So I decided to make the background darker by overlaying black rectangle and decreasing the transparency of the picture. My friend also said that the Keris needed to be more stands out, so I have the idea to crop the Keris only and place it on the front of the background. Here I also added the issue date, the price and the barcode 

Here I started using the 1/3rd of the page rules, where it is stated that in the 1/3 of the pages we put the important information on the 1/3 part. And that is why my barcode, price, issue date, and the author name (me) is on the left side.

My friend said that the Keris needed to be shown more and make it the "main star" of the front cover. In order to follow his suggestion, I have resized the picture and make it a lot bigger. And now it appears more stands out than before.

From this point, a friend of me told me how to use guidelines on canva so I removed my temporary borderline as it is no longer needed. And the effect for that is as you can see the coverline is now is in line with each other. I also remove my name from the author as I don't think it will suit and I just don't like it to be there.

In this version, I edited the color and the quality of the keris picture a little bit as well a s making the picture less blurry as one of my friend said that the picture is so blurry and i tried my best to use an online picture enhancer remove blurs, and I am quite satisfied with the color.

During the making of my double page spread, I realize the flow of the content doesn't only revolves on a niche district which is previously outlined as Bali, but rather I discuss the culture not just in Bali but also in the Java Province. And for that I decided to change the sub-masthead from The True Nature of Balinese Art to The True nature of Indonesian Art as I am representing more than one region in this case. And this is my final front cover page.

FINAL DESIGN

Magazine Layout Tutorial

 In this post, I will demonstrate some basic design skills that I learned in class.

1. I started by Sketching my magazine covers. I am not really satisfied with my drawing as I am not skilled enough to make a sophisticated result on it. 

2. Then my teacher told me to experiment with some default magazine layouts. 

Here's some improvement I've made using border guidelines, as well as adding colors and resizing some texts.

3. Next, my teacher shows us elements on 

- Borders

- Hierarchy of type (Times New Roman, Comic Sans)

- Typeface

- Colours

REFLECTION: Overall, I can imagine and visualise the flow of my article, I have some understanding and knowledge to what topic I will be outline, cover and discuss on my article. The purpose for my article is to counter common misconceptions (such as types of keris, the craftsmen, or the sacred journey to own a religious Keris) that has been established for a long time due to bias-judgement or misleading sources. Not only that, I would also cover a history of Keris in general to raise my reader's curiosity and create a more diverse content. I will be experimenting my articles in my free time after my exam so I am expecting some changes on this post later on (maybe I would add a reflection under the new changes or whatever to expand my skills and to outline the inspiration I can use). 

A. Where it all begin

Indonesian keris ranges more than 1,200 a long time. At to begin with, the keris was employed as a cutting tools, but afterward it was developed into a popular and reliable weapon or talisman in Indonesian culture. In ancient times, keris was used by kings, nobles and heroes as a symbol of power and courage. There are a few sorts of keris which are popular in Indonesia, such as Majapahit keris, Balinese keris, and Javanese keris. Despite of the contrasts in shape and carving, all of the keris share a crucial role in Indonesian culture scenes. The modern keris that we’ve known today has existed since the mid 14th century in Indonesia, it was originated in East Java and starting to spread out to other regions such as other parts of Java, Bali, and Sumatra. Keris also holds cultural roles in various parts of Southeast Asia countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, and the southern Philippines which they have their own unique names to describe Keris in their own language.

B. What is Keris?

Before getting know the history, let us introduce ourselves to the infamous Keris itself. In simple terms, Keris is a dagger or a blade with an asymmetrical-wavy shape (while some others may have the general-straight shape). The Keris can be made from one to three different metals, those metals are Iron, Steel and Meteorite flakes (meteorite flakes can be replaced with Nickel). In some regions of Bali, Mpu (The keris smith as well as the priest who lead the foraging of Keris) can make their own iron from the sea sand they have gathered from the coast as a raw material for Keris. In fact, these metal have different melting points which is what makes it the biggest challenge for most forager to melt, merge and forge these metals into one blade. 

C. Pamor

There’s a unique motive-pattern formed on the Keris blade called Pamor, it forms due to the repeated heating, folding and forging the Keris. Pamor doesn’t only act as an aesthetic purposes, they also hold impactful and stimulating meanings behind the formation. There are two types of Pamor, Pamor Rekan (pre-planned pattern requested by the owner which doesn’t hold deep meaning and serve only as ornament purposes) and Pamor Tiban (unplanned pattern said to have more energy than pamor rekan. Pamor tiban is regarded as a gift from the God/Deities). For Pamor Tiban, the Mpu is able to customize the pattern of the pamor by twisting, bending, turning and eventually drilling into the iron bar based on what kind of Pamor the owner want and need. There are two methods of making Pamor where each of them have different intentions and meaning behind it, Pamor Mlumah (the layers of iron and pamor are made transverse and perpendicular - for luck and tranquility) and Pamor Miring (the layers of iron and pamor are made flat or parallel - for glory). According to some beliefs, pamor has an enormous magical power and influences to the life of its owner, that is why some owner wanted different types of Pamor as their “indirect” prays to wish them a long prosperous life, wealth or health to the owner and their relatives. 

D. Keris in the SouthEastern Asian

The Keris is a common weapon along the Malayan Peninsula, Indonesia, and he Philippines. At first,the keris was used as a cutting tool, but later developed into the most famous and important weapon in Indonesian culture. In ancient times, keris was used by kings, nobles and heroes as a symbol of power and courage.
