Stuart Hall: Representation Theory

 1. Representation Theory

- What is representation? Representation is the way someone or something in the media being portrayed or illustrated, if there are more common representation of the subject or object this could lead to stereotype.

- What is a stereotype? It is a generalized idea, picture, or behaviour of an object, subject or groups in a media as they're oftenly being represented or portrayed based on that behaviours

- Why are stereotypes used? Lack of diversity (source person, references) in the writers room. Apart from that, it can be accepted by the mass media as it is commonly engraved in as their beliefs for certain types of social groups.

- What social groups are represented in the media? Religions, Race, Genders, Age

2. Two socials groups that are stereotyped in Indonesian media

- What is the group

Muslim

- How are they represented (MeS, sound, etc)

They are represented to be intolerant with the other religions

- What is the reason for this

They are many debatable reasons on why this happen, but mostly it occurs because it really happen on the media news. Some media news reported seeing Churches are closed down and other religion's prayer are being force to be disbanded on behalf of the Muslim because this is their territory and they want to keep it for the Muslims only.

- How does the audience receive this message

Some people coming from the minority groups, the religions aside Muslim, agreed on this stereotypical behaviour being done by the Muslim because they've feel it directly on the scene or too much exposure of media telling Muslim are mostly intolerants that they've start developing this believe to be true, explained in Social Learning theory by Bandura.

- Example for media texts
